WordPress Jetpack Comments Issue – Can’t connect to Facebook, Google, Twitter etc. for comment

WordPress Jetpack plugin is a must have WordPress Plugin for any WordPress website. If you are already using Jetpack, you may have encountered an issue with the comments feature where you are unable to connect to the Social Media platforms to sign in to comment. For example while attempting to use Facebook to comment, it gets stuck on ‘Connecting to Facebook’. As per out tests, some of the social comment is working on some browsers just fine but not on certain browsers. In this post, we shall see the Jetpack Comment done on the following browsers namely, Google Chrome, Firefox Microsoft Edge and Opera.

What is Jetpack plugin?

Jetpack WordPress Plugin is a plugin suite developed by by WordPress experts (‘Automattic’) to make WP sites safer and faster, and help you grow your traffic. Jetpack plugin include features related to WordPress security, performance, marketing, and design. Jetpack has tons of features some free and some paid features that allows you to manage the features you want to use, and you can turn off the features you don’t need.

Tested on: Google Chrome
Version 95.0.4638.69 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Result: Working

  • Facebook is working as per test on Google Chrome Version 96.0.4664.45 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 11.
  • Google Account still does not work on the above Google Chrome version on Windows 11.

Tested on : Firefox

We tested all the four services on Firefox browser namely – WordPress, Google Account, Twitter and Facebook. We were able to successfully log in to the four services to comment on the WordPress website as show in the screenshots below.

We tested all the four services on Microsoft Edge browser and the results are as given below.

WordPress Account: Success

Google Account: Not Working – Infinite load – “Connecting to Google”

Twitter: Success

Facebook: Not Working – Infinite load – “Connecting to Facebook”

Update: 15.12.2021

  • Facebook is working on Microsoft Edge Version 96.0.1054.53 (Official build) (64-bit) on Windows 11.
  • Google Account still doesn’t work.

Tested on : Opera
Version 80.0.4170.63
Date: 08.11.2021

We tested all the four services on Opera browser and the results are as given below.

WordPress Account: Success

Google Account: Not Working – Infinite load – “Connecting to Google”

Twitter: Success

Facebook: Not Working – Infinite load – “Connecting to Facebook”


Summary:

As per our tests on four different browsers, the results indicate that Firefox has no issues logging in to the social accounts with Jetpack Comments.

  • WordPress Account: Works on all the four browsers.
  • Twitter Account: Works on all the four browsers.
  • Google Account:
    • Works on Firefox browser.
    • Does not work on Google Chrome, Opera and Microsoft Edge
  • Facebook Account:
    • Works on Firefox browser.
    • Does not work on Google Chrome, Opera and Microsoft Edge

You can also find the issue reported on many forums and Jetpack support. In one of the solution cited here

This is probably caused by a blocked XMLRPC file. Your site’s XMLRPC file needs to be unblocked for Jetpack to connect to WordPress.com and for all features to properly work.

Please contact your host and ask them to unblock your site’s XML-RPC file. Then you’ll be able to connect and the Facebook issue with be resolved.

But if it is working on Firefox browser, it should not be an issue with the website configuration or settings.

Anyway, we checked Security plugin used on the website for settings related to XML-RPC whether XML-RPC is allowed or not. XML-RPC was found to be allowed in the settings. So, blocked XML-PRC may not the issue here in our case.

Another comment on WordPress support says:
